Buffer sizing in critical chain project management by network decomposition

چکیده
Project management organizes about 30% of the world’s economy. Many recent projects apply critical chain project (CCPM) methodology, which requires design and feeding buffers. Accurate sizing these buffers is essential, because too small result in emergency procedures to prevent late delivery, whereas large uncompetitive bids lost contracts. Previous buffer research, focused predominantly on chain, typically results excessive buffers, chains being challenged by during planning. This work also performs inconsistently, for example makespan estimation, at execution. We propose a new procedure based network decomposition, offers logical advantages over previous ones. First, size determined from all associated noncritical chains. Second, incorporates safety margins outside comparing with their parallel counterparts. Computational testing case study real extensive simulated data shows that our delivers much greater accuracy estimating makespan, smaller Furthermore, resulting never challenged. Additional benefits include delayed expenditure, reductions work-in-process, rework, multitasking.

Critical Chain Project Scheduling: Utilizing Uncertainty for Buffer Sizing
In this paper, we introduce a method for buffer sizing in Critical Chain project scheduling. Proposed approach considers lognormal distribution for modeling activities’ execution time. The inherent uncertainty of activities considered as a main factor to size the buffer in proposed method. For comparing with traditional methods we used problems presented in literature. The results depict that p...
متن کاملnew method to determine buffer size for high risk project environment in critical chain method
in this research, a method for determining feeding buffer sizes in critical chain project scheduling is introduced. the method integrates project characteristics into the formulation as well as environment project risk. resource tightness, environment risk and network morphology incorporate into the formulation. the method is tested and compared to three commonly suggested methods in the litera...
متن کاملCritical Chain Project Management Theory and Practice
It is now over 10 years since the first publication on Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) (Goldratt, 1997). Since then, software and implementation practice have developed rapidly. The logic and assumptions underpinning this new knowledge has recently been published (Goldratt, 2007) in the form of a strategy and tactics (S&T) tree. It is, therefore, timely to review the CCPM claims from b...

Methods for sizing project and feeding buffers for critical chain project management are investigated. Experiments indicate that – in the absence of bias, and for certain classes of bias – buffer consumption is independent of the mean duration of a chain. Generally the popular method – a buffer size equal to 50% of the longest path leading to it – gives rise to excessively large buffers. Buffer...
متن کاملBuffer Sizing at a Host in an ATM Network
This paper develops a queueing model of a buffer that collects cells for reassembly into packets for a protocol layer above the ATM layer. Whenever the buffer fills with all packets incomplete, a packet must be sacrificed to make room for others. The queueing model estimates the equilibrium fraction of packets sacrificed. Applications to sizing the buffer for a prescribed loss probability are g...
